Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace!
That where there is hatred, I may bring love.
That where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness.
That where there is discord, I may bring harmony.
That where there is error, I may bring truth.
That where there is doubt, I may bring faith.
That where there is despair, I may bring hope.
That where there are shadows, I may bring light.
That where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort, than to be comforted.
To understand, than to be understood.
To love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.

Soul work

Q1. Grant that I may seek …to love, than to be loved.

What does this mean?
Give an example when you were loving more than to be loved.
And when you cared more about whether they loved you.

Q2. For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.

What does this mean?
Give an example of when you were loving more than to be loved.
And when you cared more about whether they loved you.

Q3. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
What does this mean?
Give an example of when you were loving more than to be loved.
And when you cared more about whether they loved you.

Q4. It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.
What does this mean?
Give an example of when you were loving more than to be loved.
And when you cared more about whether they loved you.

Ends.

Soul work

Q1. As a recovered person on step 11 evaluating your future, how are you treating yourself? Would you say you drive yourself hard, that you are moderate or you are gentle?

That where there is error, I may bring truth.

Q2.As a recovered person own and write on this statement as it is with your intimate people – spouse, children, boss, friends, etc.

Then ask for example:
a) How you are going to handle it when somebody thinks very differently from you about recovery.?

b) Or when you think somebody is doing half measures?

Where there is doubt I may bring faith.

Q3.a) How are you going to tell somebody with no faith in recovery that it works?

b) How are you going to help someone who is diabolically opposed to the idea of a Higher Power or God that God/HP is behind this 12-step programme?

c). Own this prayer with examples and relating your experience from doubt to faith.

OR If you only have faith in the 12 step programme not in God. Write about it honestly and take it to Quiet Time.

Where there is despair I may bring hope.

Q5. How do you help someone with no hope who is in despair?

Ends.

Look up discord.

Take this whole prayer, break it down the way Stephanie broke it down sentence by sentence and write about each.

For instance: Write an example where you have been a channel of peace. And then where you have not been a channel of peace. And so on.

From last paragraph on page 97 “Those of us who have come to…

Soul work

Page 98:1 There is a direct linkage among self-examination, meditation, and prayer.
Above self-examination write ‘inventory.’

Page 98:2 As we have seen, self-searching is the means by which we bring new vision, action, and grace to bear upon the dark and negative side of our natures.
Above action write ‘Action Plan.’
Above dark and negative side write ‘selfishness.’

Q1. Are you doing your gratitudes and living in the attitude of gratitude? [If you are, you are going to have unshakeable willingness to do self-examination and prayer.
And if you are not, you can pray for help to do so.]

Through self-examination, meditation and prayer you make the quality of your life. We do have self-will and we can will ourselves to be grateful for what we have.

Q2. If you are grateful for what you have got you are never unhappy with what you have been given.
Write on this, giving three examples from your life.

The first two paragraphs on Page 98 beginning:
‘There is a direct linkage among self-examination, meditation and prayer…’

‘As we have seen, self-searching is the means by which we bring…’
These are promises that Bill is giving us.

Q3. Break down the above two paragraphs and own them for yourself.

Q4. Write the basic definition of humility:
I can’t, You can, I am going to ask You.

How would you, in your own words, explain humility?

Step 11 “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.”

From the beginning of the step until the end of the third paragraph.

Look up: sought, recoiled, obstinately.

Q1.Do you have in the back of your mind that attitude that prayer and meditation is really not necessary? Why you think you have that attitude. If you did in the past what changed it?

Q2. Are you rebelling against the idea of bowing down before the God of your understanding?
And if you are, why do you think you are rebelling?

Many of us had strong logic too which “proved” there was no God whatever. What about all the accidents, sickness, cruelty, and injustice in the world? What about all those unhappy lives which were the direct result of unfortunate birth and uncontrollable circumstances? Surely there could be no justice in this scheme of things, and therefore no God at all.

Q3. Are you going to be bemoaning the cruelty and injustice in the world or are you going to with God in Quiet Time and with an action plan overcome it with a positive attitude?

Q4. Two mothers whose sons had accidents were both at
the hospital. One mother was moaning the other was saying:
With God this is going to prove how great God is. And how God works through my son.
Where are you in relation to the story of the two mothers?

Step 1, I admit I am powerless over my refusal to try prayer and meditation and my life is unmanageable
Step 2) Came to believe that I could try to make prayer and meditation the first and most important action in my life.
Step 3) I made the decision to take the action to pray and meditate.

Q5 Are you willing to put your resistance to prayer and meditation through Steps 1, 2 and 3, asking for help?

Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: Into Action.
Page 87 from last paragraph:-

…“Thy will be done.” We are then in much less danger of excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-pity, or foolish decisions. We become much more efficient. We do not tire so easily, for we are not burning up energy foolishly as we did when we were trying to arrange life to suit ourselves.

We alcoholics are undisciplined. So we let God discipline us in the simple way we have just outlined.

But this is not all. There is action and more action. “Faith without works is dead.” The next chapter is entirely devoted to Step Twelve.

Definition of worry: Its like sitting in a rocking chair, you put in a lot of energy but go nowhere.

Q1. “Thy will be done.” How do you live that?
Give four or five recent things from your life that you have been having an issue with (for example for Stephanie it was exercise) and how you brought these to God. What was God’s answer, your Action Plan and did you get Accountability around it?

Q2a). Look up: moderate. How is moderate for you today in recovery?
b) When you see you are not being moderate what do you do?

Q3. Are you still trying to arrange life to suit yourself?
b) Are you willing to bring this to God?

Q4. “We alcoholics are undisciplined”.
Write about the past and the present in relation to this.

Q5.”Faith without works is dead.” What does this mean to you?

Q6. Stephanie says if she has no accountability about what she is going to do, she believes she is going to do something but then she doesn’t. Can you relate to that?

Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: Into Action.
Page 87 from last paragraph:-

As we go through the day we pause, when agitated or doubtful, and ask for the right thought or action. We constantly remind ourselves we are no longer running the show, humbly saying to ourselves many times each day “Thy will be done.” We are then in much less danger of excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-pity, or foolish decisions. We become much more efficient. We do not tire so easily, for we are not burning up energy foolishly as we did when we were trying to arrange life to suit ourselves.

It works – it really does.

We alcoholics are undisciplined. So we let God discipline us in the simple way we have just outlined.

Or just said: I am not dealing with this right now. I will take it to Quiet Time later. I will talk to someone later and were really able to put it out of your mind?

Q6. How long have I struggled with the discipline of Quiet Time?

Q7.It works It really does. Do I really believe that IT is God that makes the difference?

Big Book Chapter 6 entitled: Into Action
Page 87:2 & start of paragraph 3.

“If circumstances warrant, we ask our wives or friends to join us in morning meditation. If we belong to a religious denomination which requires a definite morning devotion, we attend to that also. If not members of religious bodies, we sometimes select and memorize a few set prayers which emphasize the principles we have been discussing. There are many helpful books also. Suggestions about these may be obtained from one’s priest, minister, or rabbi. be quick to see where religious people are right. Make use of what they offer.

As we go through the day we pause, when agitated or doubtful, and ask for the right thought or action. We constantly remind ourselves we are no longer running the show, humbly saying to ourselves many times each day “Thy will be done.” ”

Soul work

Q1 Quiet Time.

Have you invited your wife/husband/friend to join you?
d) Do you have a format that you take into your Quiet Time?
e) Have you memorised prayers you can use when you are in a 911 situation?
f) Do you have a daily reading book e.g. As Bill Sees It, that you bring into meditation? Or do you have lots of books and read several of them?

b) What’s the value of going through the day having pauses?

Q6a) Do you like gratitude and see its value or think its overstated in our programme?
b) Are you grateful? Are there degrees of gratitude?
d) Can you see the value and be grateful if someone is honest with you even if it is not complimentary? Or do you still think: “How dare they?”

At the end of Quiet Time ask God:
What’s my plan of action?
God help me to complete it.
Have accountability around it.

Big Book is saying do this all day. To be given the power, the willingness to do it.

“We ask especially freedom from self-will.” This is so important.

You have done all the hard work, now can ratchet it up, to bring you to the fourth dimension and
a life that is awesome. As an addict we are either going forwards or going backwards. Recovery
affects all areas of our life: job, relationships, health, etc.

Don’t ever say to another person:
“10 ,11 and 12 are maintenance steps.” If you are maintaining you are going back. These are growth steps that require action. Do you want to maintain where you are at or do you want to
grow and become the best possible recovered version of yourself?

Soul work

Chapter entitled: Into Action
Page 87:1

“We usually conclude the period of meditation with a prayer that we be shown all through the day what our next step is to be , that we be given whatever we need to take care of such problems. We ask especially for freedom from self-will, and are careful to make no request for ourselves only. We may ask for ourselves, however, if others will be helped. We are careful never to pray for our own selfish ends. Many of us he wasted a lot of time doing that and it doesn’t work. You can easily see why.”

Q1. FEAR acronym: Face Everything And Recover
Where are you with that today and generally?

When you are angry look below it. You are afraid of something.
Fear will paralyze us even in recovery. That’s why we need step 11.

Q2. What do you fear right now? Bring these fears to Quiet Time.

Q3a) Look up: complacency. (Stephanie is trying to help us out of complacency).
b) List the areas where you are complacent.
c) Do any of these match your fears and if so how?
This is going to require wisdom so take it to God.

[e.g. God I am complacent in my financial area. What I am afraid of? Well I am 67 years old and its only three years before I retire and am not making it financially. I am not going to get a new job because I’m afraid.]

Q4a) What do you love to do?
b) Are you afraid of doing what you love?

Q5. Where are you going in the present and the future? It is going to be humdrum or exciting?

Q6. “Your will God not mine be done”.
a) What does this mean to you?
How do you sum up page 87:1?

Every program person is going to interpret this differently. Own this paragraph. Own the acronym FEAR. Own the word complacency so instead of a complacent recovery you have a dynamic one that you are excited about. A dynamic recovery means a dynamic life. You cannot separate the two.
