Q8. When you go to Quiet Time, are you feeling God’s grace, wisdom and love?

Week #293 August 10 2017

12 Steps and 12 Traditions
Bottom of page 100~101

1). Read over the 11th Step Prayer, and reread it again. Sit quietly and ask your Higher Power what the inner essence is that your Divine Source wants you to understand.
Glean the best from it for you and your life. Then write out the inner essence for you. Write out what you want your inner essence of your personhood to be (like you would a business statement or mission statement for your business or foundation).

2.) What is a “Channel”? Look it up. What does “Channel of Grace” mean to you?

3.) Do you want to be a channel of grace that brings love, forgiveness, harmony, truth, faith, hope, light, joy, comfort and understanding to all? Be honest with yourself.

4.) If you do want to be that channel, do you see yourself as accomplishing it? Write an example that you have seen. Could you be doing more? Brig this to Quiet Time as a request to your Higher Power.

5.) Who in your life is a channel giving you grace of love, forgiveness, harmony, truth, faith, hope, light, joy, comfort and understanding? You need to receive so as to refill your own well. Plus, other people need the joy of giving to you, so you must accept it from them.

6.) How good are you at accepting people’s gifts? Who is wanting to give you this grace? It must be two-way street.

Give + take=healthy relationship

7.) What does “Self-forgetting” mean? Really investigate it.

1) Describe in detail the way you meditate. Do you have any resistance to the 11th Step prayer? What words, phrases?
What did you replace that with?

2) Do you “debate” when you are meditating? (top of page 100)

3) Describe how it feels to rest quietly with the thoughts you know come from God.

4) What are using now to bring yourself into quiet time? For example what prayer, literature, religious text?

5) Are you willing to partake and strengthen and be lifted up by the sheer spiritual power, beauty and love of which those magnificent words are the carrier?

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace!
That where there is hatred, I may bring love.
That where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness.
That where there is discord, I may bring harmony.
That where there is error, I may bring truth.
That where there is doubt, I may bring faith.
That where there is despair, I may bring hope.
That where there are shadows, I may bring light.
That where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort, than to be comforted.
To understand, than to be understood.
To love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.

Soul work

Q1. Grant that I may seek …to love, than to be loved.

What does this mean?
Give an example when you were loving more than to be loved.
And when you cared more about whether they loved you.

Q2. For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.

What does this mean?
Give an example of when you were loving more than to be loved.
And when you cared more about whether they loved you.

Q3. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
What does this mean?
Give an example of when you were loving more than to be loved.
And when you cared more about whether they loved you.

Q4. It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.
What does this mean?
Give an example of when you were loving more than to be loved.
And when you cared more about whether they loved you.

Soul work

Q1. As a recovered person on step 11 evaluating your future, how are you treating yourself? Would you say you drive yourself hard, that you are moderate or you are gentle?

That where there is error, I may bring truth.

Q2.As a recovered person own and write on this statement as it is with your intimate people – spouse, children, boss, friends, etc.

Then ask for example:
a) How you are going to handle it when somebody thinks very differently from you about recovery.?

b) Or when you think somebody is doing half measures?

Where there is doubt I may bring faith.

Q3.a) How are you going to tell somebody with no faith in recovery that it works?

b) How are you going to help someone who is diabolically opposed to the idea of a Higher Power or God that God/HP is behind this 12-step programme?

c). Own this prayer with examples and relating your experience from doubt to faith.

OR If you only have faith in the 12 step programme not in God. Write about it honestly and take it to Quiet Time.

Where there is despair I may bring hope.

Q5. How do you help someone with no hope who is in despair?

Look up discord.

Take this whole prayer, break it down the way Stephanie broke it down sentence by sentence and write about each.

For instance: Write an example where you have been a channel of peace. And then where you have not been a channel of peace. And so on.

From last paragraph on page 97 “Those of us who have come to…

Soul work

Page 98:1 There is a direct linkage among self-examination, meditation, and prayer.
Above self-examination write ‘inventory.’

Page 98:2 As we have seen, self-searching is the means by which we bring new vision, action, and grace to bear upon the dark and negative side of our natures.
Above action write ‘Action Plan.’
Above dark and negative side write ‘selfishness.’

Q1. Are you doing your gratitudes and living in the attitude of gratitude? [If you are, you are going to have unshakeable willingness to do self-examination and prayer.
And if you are not, you can pray for help to do so.]

Through self-examination, meditation and prayer you make the quality of your life. We do have self-will and we can will ourselves to be grateful for what we have.

Q2. If you are grateful for what you have got you are never unhappy with what you have been given.
Write on this, giving three examples from your life.

The first two paragraphs on Page 98 beginning:
‘There is a direct linkage among self-examination, meditation and prayer…’

‘As we have seen, self-searching is the means by which we bring…’
These are promises that Bill is giving us.

Q3. Break down the above two paragraphs and own them for yourself.

Q4. Write the basic definition of humility:
I can’t, You can, I am going to ask You.

How would you, in your own words, explain humility?

Step 11 “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.”

From the beginning of the step until the end of the third paragraph.

Look up: sought, recoiled, obstinately.

Q1.Do you have in the back of your mind that attitude that prayer and meditation is really not necessary? Why you think you have that attitude. If you did in the past what changed it?

Q2. Are you rebelling against the idea of bowing down before the God of your understanding?
And if you are, why do you think you are rebelling?

Many of us had strong logic too which “proved” there was no God whatever. What about all the accidents, sickness, cruelty, and injustice in the world? What about all those unhappy lives which were the direct result of unfortunate birth and uncontrollable circumstances? Surely there could be no justice in this scheme of things, and therefore no God at all.

Q3. Are you going to be bemoaning the cruelty and injustice in the world or are you going to with God in Quiet Time and with an action plan overcome it with a positive attitude?

Q4. Two mothers whose sons had accidents were both at
the hospital. One mother was moaning the other was saying:
With God this is going to prove how great God is. And how God works through my son.
Where are you in relation to the story of the two mothers?

Step 1, I admit I am powerless over my refusal to try prayer and meditation and my life is unmanageable
Step 2) Came to believe that I could try to make prayer and meditation the first and most important action in my life.
Step 3) I made the decision to take the action to pray and meditate.

Q5 Are you willing to put your resistance to prayer and meditation through Steps 1, 2 and 3, asking for help?

Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: Into Action.
Page 87 from last paragraph:-

…“Thy will be done.” We are then in much less danger of excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-pity, or foolish decisions. We become much more efficient. We do not tire so easily, for we are not burning up energy foolishly as we did when we were trying to arrange life to suit ourselves.

We alcoholics are undisciplined. So we let God discipline us in the simple way we have just outlined.

But this is not all. There is action and more action. “Faith without works is dead.” The next chapter is entirely devoted to Step Twelve.

Definition of worry: Its like sitting in a rocking chair, you put in a lot of energy but go nowhere.

Q1. “Thy will be done.” How do you live that?
Give four or five recent things from your life that you have been having an issue with (for example for Stephanie it was exercise) and how you brought these to God. What was God’s answer, your Action Plan and did you get Accountability around it?

Q2a). Look up: moderate. How is moderate for you today in recovery?
b) When you see you are not being moderate what do you do?

Q3. Are you still trying to arrange life to suit yourself?
b) Are you willing to bring this to God?

Q4. “We alcoholics are undisciplined”.
Write about the past and the present in relation to this.

Q5.”Faith without works is dead.” What does this mean to you?

Q6. Stephanie says if she has no accountability about what she is going to do, she believes she is going to do something but then she doesn’t. Can you relate to that?

Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: Into Action.
Page 87 from last paragraph:-

As we go through the day we pause, when agitated or doubtful, and ask for the right thought or action. We constantly remind ourselves we are no longer running the show, humbly saying to ourselves many times each day “Thy will be done.” We are then in much less danger of excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-pity, or foolish decisions. We become much more efficient. We do not tire so easily, for we are not burning up energy foolishly as we did when we were trying to arrange life to suit ourselves.

It works – it really does.

We alcoholics are undisciplined. So we let God discipline us in the simple way we have just outlined.

Q1 How did you do this week with:
a) not running the show?
b) humbly saying to yourself many times: Thy Will be Done?

Q3. How long did you stay in excitement of excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-pity, or foolish decisions before you went to God, or did a spot check inventory, a nightly review, you called somebody. How long did it take?

Q4. How many times did you stop and pause instead?

Q5. Did you see how much more smoothly and efficiently your life went when you stopped, paused asked God for help, did a quick inventory or made a quick phone call. Or just said: I am not dealing with this right now. I will take it to Quiet Time later. I will talk to someone later and were really able to put it out of your mind?

Q6. How long have I struggled with the discipline of Quiet Time?

Q7.It works It really does. Do I really believe that IT is God that makes the difference?

Q8. Faith without works is dead. What does that mean to you?
